چکیده

Background: Low cortisol levels are linked to a range of human behaviors and pathologies. However, it is not clear whether cortisol levels are a stable biological marker in adolescence. Therefore, in the current longitudinal study, the stability of having a low or high morning cortisol level during adolescence is studied in a delinquent and a general population sample. Methods: Adolescent boys were included from a delinquent sample (n = 45, 13.7 ± 0.7 years) and a general population sample (n = 231, 11.1 ± 0.5 years). Morning salivary cortisol was measured directly after awakening and 30 minutes after awakening, in early adolescence (T0) and at five year follow-up (T1). Ranking analyses were used to specifically analyze the stability of morning cortisol levels. Possible confounding influences of age, pubertal stage and smoking behavior were taken into account. results: There were no significant correlations in cortisol rankings between T0 and T1 in both samples. Conclusions: No evidence for stability of cortisol levels during adolescence in a delinquent population as well as in a general population sample was found. Implications of these findings for the interpretation and expectation of low cortisol as a stable marker for (antisocial) behavior are discussed. 21536_marjan_de_vries_080212.indd 80 09-02-12 12:50

تعیین استرس ناشی از صدا با سنجش تغییرات کورتیزول بزاقی

Introduction: Noise exposure is known as a risk factor for hearing loss and one of its effects is noise-induced stress. Cortisol, as stress hormone- is used in noise-induced stress assessments studies. The aims of this study were:(1) measuring and comparing saliva cortisol concentrations in the morning and evening in normal work day and rest day between two groups, (2) assessing the relationshi...

Disruptive behaviors and HPA-axis activity in young adolescent boys and girls from the general population.

It is important to investigate associations between biological factors and disruptive behaviors in children and adolescents. Antisocial, aggressive, and criminal behaviors in adults often begin early in life. Disruptive behaviors are often thought to be associated with low activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Cortisol, the end-product of this axis, can be measured to inves...

Cortisol Diurnal Rhythm and Stress Reactivity in Male Adolescents with Early-Onset or Adolescence-Onset Conduct Disorder

BACKGROUND Previous studies have reported lower basal cortisol levels and reduced cortisol responses to stress in children and adolescents with conduct disorder (CD). It is not known whether these findings are specific to early-onset CD. This study investigated basal and stress-induced cortisol secretion in male participants with early-onset and adolescence-onset forms of CD. METHODS Forty-tw...

بررسی تغییرات میزان کورتیزول خون در کارگران شیفت کار و ارتباط آن با ویژگی های فردی و تطابق با شیفت کاری

Introduction: In modern societies, shift work is an essential component of daily life. Since the beginning of research in shift work, researchers have been engaged in the identification of factors predicting adjustment and adaptation to shift work. The concept of adaptation and tolerance refers mainly to the biological response in terms of circadian rhythms and performance efficiency as well as...

Effect of epinephrine and cortisol on fasting-induced ghrelin secretion in male rats fed different levels of their energy requirement

Introduction: ghrelin is a potent orexigenic agent in rodents and humans. Some studies have shown that ghrelin participates in the adaptive response to weight loss and plasma concentration of ghrelin rises with dieting. On the other hand, weight loss and fasting is accompanied by increased levels of epinephrine and cortisol. In this study, we investigated the effects of epinephrine and corti...
